Head of the Department: Prof. Dr. Octavian Popescu Research directions: - Taxonomical, structural and physiological diversity of microorganisms from natural environments in normal and extreme conditions (temperature, pH, ion concentration); - Studies upon the structure-function relationship in the context of adaptation to extreme and hostile environmental conditions; - Identification and study at cellular and molecular level of some structures and metabolites with bio(nano)technological potential; - Studies upon microorganisms from environments with high pollution concentration for their use in complementary technologies in the bioremediation of polluted environments.
