Launch
of the PESACONAT Project – Natural Solutions for Protecting the Black
Sea Coasts
The Institute
of Biology Bucharest of the Romanian Academy, as project leader,
announces the launch of the international PESACONAT project – BSB
01041 “Preventing the erosion of sandy Black Sea coasts through a
nature-based solution”, funded under the Interreg VI-B NEXT Black
Sea Basin Programme.
The project's
main objective is to prevent and limit coastal erosion of sandy beaches
in the Black Sea basin by developing an ecological solution based on the
restoration of Zostera noltii (eelgrass) submarine
habitats. This marine plant contributes to sediment stabilization,
reduces wave energy, and supports the recovery of coastal ecosystems.
Coastal
erosion represents a major environmental issue in the Black Sea region,
affecting local communities, infrastructure, and biodiversity.
Approximately 19% of the Black Sea coastline is subject to high erosion
rates, particularly in the Danube Delta (Romania), the Kizilirmak and
Yesilirmak deltas (Turkey), and the Georgian coast.
Project
Objectives
Project
Consortium
The project
is implemented by a consortium consisting of:
Through this
initiative, partners aim to increase the resilience of marine ecosystems
to climate change, reduce CO₂
emissions, and promote sustainable blue economy.
Project
results will be made available to public authorities, research
institutions, NGOs, and local communities in Black Sea riparian
countries. Additionally, project results will be disseminated within the
scientific community through conference participations, scientific
sessions, and publications in mainstream scientific journals.
