THE FIGHT AGAINST AND DISAPPEARANCE OF WOLVES (CANIS LUPUS L., 1758) IN THE DANUBE PLAIN AND THE MOLDAVIAN PLATEAU BETWEEN THE SIRET AND PRUT RIVERS (ROMANIA)

SORIN GEACU

 Abstract:

The paper analyses the population dynamics of wolves (Canis lupus L., 1758) after the Second World War in the Danube Plain and the Moldavian Plateau between the Siret and Prut rivers, which are regions located in southern and eastern Romania. The intense efforts to combat this mammal by various means are highlighted in much detail. Hunting wolves was allowed up until 1996, after which point it became a protected species. By 1960â€"1965, wolves had already disappeared in most of the plain areas, but in the higher and well-forested areas of the Moldavian Plateau they persisted until 1990â€"2000. The last wolf hunted was in 1995 in Vaslui County.
