THE BIOGEOGRAPHY OF SPRINGTAILS IN THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS WITH DETECTING OF DIVERSITY HOTSPOTS, GLACIAL REFUGIA AND POSTGLACIAL COLONIZATION PATTERNS”

Director proiect: Dr. Cristina Fiera, CS1

The present project integrates a wide range of new and innovative tools and methods to address relevant ecological questions about ecological processes that drive the diversity patterns of Collembola communities in Carpathians Mountains, especially for threatened species, trying to indicate of dispersal routes, colonization sources and glacial refugia. Improved understanding of the factors that restrict range sizes and sufficiently precise models to foresee changes in the spatial distribution of rare species are therefore indispensable tools in biodiversity forecasting and conservation management.

The project will provide first information about the extent of cryptic diversity of Collembola from Romanian Carpathians. These results on genetic aspects will be integrated in phylogeographical patterns and could resolve some problems as: current genetic diversity, distribution of lineages, and cryptic speciation within Collembola species; importance of the Carpathians as a glacial refugium for some species or structure of the Carpathian refugial area in terms of multiple isolated sites. The dataset of this project will be added to the data pool of other Carpathian countries, in order to formulate a more detailed view on the spatial distribution of Collembola across the whole Carpathian range (large-scale analysis).

Preliminary and final results will be presented to the international soil zoology community by participation at some Conferences (XVIII International Colloquium on Soil Zoology; XV International Colloquium on Apterygota, 6th European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB) that will overlap with the project (2021, 2022).

Project results will be disseminated to the broader scientific community through publications in peer-reviewed ISI journals with high impact factor.
